I don't think we're selecting the next [country of choice] Idol here, and even if we were, THAT competition is based on a popular vote... in fact they (and every other competition) do it the other way 'round. Judges are used early to weed out the chaff, and the final say is purely popular vote. It gets the crowd involved, and gives people a motivation to talk up the competition to their friends, which not incidentally encourages them to show off their own skills. Getting people out of their shells... it's what we do.

But first and foremost it's a friendly competition and a game. Just as losing at Monopoly won't brand you as a failure in finance, we don't have to assign too much gravity to winning and losing here. Let's not get so serious that we lose sight of that.Dave Leighhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08617556290378317379noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2809231066058459051.post-46338444344921339402014-01-12T09:40:40.138-05:002014-01-12T09:40:40.138-05:00I'm going to repeat my thoughts in the discuss...I'm going to repeat my thoughts in the discussion we were having on FB about the rue changes...

I'm not happy with that change. I liked the popular vote counting as a judge the first 2 rounds. Keeps new blood in the game. Also makes voting relevant. Very little point if it's only a tiebreaker

Those bands would be eliminated in any case in the next round. However, the popular vote also counteracts unconscious judges bias towards previous contestants they know. If you look at who is cut each round, the bottom 1/4 is mostly new entrants.
Several reasons for that. Unfamiliarity with the rules, they might not be as experienced in creating songs to a challenge, etc, but the popular vote counteracts this small but perceptible bias by the judges.
And it also helps in the promotion and expansion of the contest. It encourages people to vote when that vote has meaning. The Tie Breaker has not been used many times, and for the most part is irrelevant in the average round.
I think we're going to agree to disagree on this one.

SongFight is ONLY popular vote. Masters of Song Fu was only popular vote. SpinTunes has been a hybrid of judging and pop vote since it started, but the ratios have changed as time goes on.

I'm game to tweak things, but I thought the previous rules of the pop vote counting as a judge for rounds 1 and 2 were pretty fair. Will an occasional group on the bubble with less votes be bounced because of the rule? Yes, they will. But it also expands the base of people listening and participating in the contest, which is very important if it's going to continue forward. If it's the same 20 people over and over, it's going to wither and die in a short time.BoffoYuxDudeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17624450251550794094noreply@blogger.com
