SpinTunes #6 Round 2 Songs

Tom had to work a little faster than usual tonight, but he once again got the job done.  Thanks Tom.  I think there were over 30 people listening in U-Stream from start to finish.

The songs are now available for FREE download, and you can vote for your favorite entries as well. Many of you will be asking friends and family to support you in the popular vote. That's great, but when you do, please ask them to listen to all the songs & vote for their favorites. You can vote for up to 5 different people, so they might as well listen to everyone.

Until the round 3 songs are posted I will only allow people to download the round 2 album as a whole. But even after that, PLEASE download the entire album vs downloading just a handful of songs while the contest is on going. BandCamp limits how many free downloads I can give away, and 1 album download counts the same as 1 song download.

After the Listening party ended, some of us hung out in a Google+ hang out awhile (1) (2) (3). If you want to drop into our next hangout you can add me to your circles & I'll add you my SpinTunes circle. Also, we have a private Facebook group that any song contributor to the contest is allowed to join. I'd love to see you all there joining in on the conversations.

With 19 entries turned in for round 2, that means there will be 5 eliminations in Round 2 and 10 eliminations in round 3. That would leave 4 finalists for round 4. Good luck everyone.

You can find the album on BandCamp by clicking the image below:

Spintunes #6 Round 1 Review: Graham Porter

Hello, my fellow SpinTunas! I'm Graham, the man behind the chronically unsuccessful Emperor Gum. You've got the privilege of being subject to my musical prejudices so I thought I'd explain my marking procedure. You'll get one mark for each of the following:

Lyrics
-Poetry for want of a better word (whether or not I think your lyrics are funny or interesting, taken totally independent of the music, try not to use cliches)
-Challenge (do your lyrics do a good job of meeting the challenge, simply name checking the challenge won't do)
-Music (do your words match your music, do you apply them musically when appropriate, general tone of the song)

Music
-Melody (main tune, solos, etc)
-Progression (structure, transitions, touches on arrangement too, try to vary things up, please don't fade out)
-Arrangement (everything other than vocals, one acoustic guitar may be the right choice if appropriate, is it sonically interesting on its own)
Performance/Recording
-Production (doesn't have to be professional standard as its songwriting contest, but vocals need to be clear and the rest of it decently balanced/performed in order for your musical ideas to come across)

Getting all seven points is very obtainable though it doesn't mean your song is perfect. For example good lyrics will get you a point, great lyrics will see you higher up the rankings. Once I've ordered everyone by points, I'll make the final list by personal preference. Here's where your production values will really count. I tend to dislike exact repetition of both lyrics and music, so try to colour your choruses, add backing vocals second time around, breakdown the last verse, etc. Creative implementations of the challenge will see you a long way too.
Your songs are the true prize of SpinTunes; be proud of them, be bold with your ideas and be graceful with your results. Best of luck, boppers!

RC - The Philosoraptor (7)
Poetry: “you try to....your own impermanence” is a particularly good section
Challenge: good job of incorporating a dinosaur's idea of thoughtfulness
Music: thoughtful vocal line fits the meme
Melody: nothing wrong with a good guitar solo!
Progression: standard song structure works, interesting tribal/kinda prehistoric intro, choruses could do with less repetition
Arrangement: good use of lead guitar fills, nice breakdown in third verse
Production: good full rock sound, a little heavy on the tambourine I think
-colour your choruses and you'll do fine by me

Jerry Skids – Not A Good Guy (7)
Poetry: some impressive references, never feels unfunny
Challenge: nice take
Music: friendly disbelief matches the acoustic nature
Melody: pretty vocal line, develops nicely
Progression: smart use of backing vocals, feels like it could end in three different places
Arrangement: solo guitar matches feel of song, good mix up of finger picking and chords, gorgeous harmonies
Production: you've got a lovely voice, audio glitch at 2:27?
-good work, tighten your ending, don't be afraid to end after your bridge or third verse

Steven Wesley Guiles - Boom Goes The Dynamite (4)
X Poetry: lyrics seem to be about but unrelated to Brian Collin, just a list of things that rhyme
X Challenge: I don't feel you came up with an interesting approach to this meme
Music: “Boom Goes The Dynamite” is a good line delivered well the first ten times...
Melody: solid melody, some good wonky-in-a-good-way synth work going on
X Progression: awkward transition into bridge, repeat the meme far too often
Arrangement: fourth beat start is a good punch, dropping instruments in and out keeps it interesting
Production: fun vocal performance, guitars bouncing left and right sound good
-your musicianship is solid, find creative ways to meet the challenges and develop your songs

TurboShandy - Piss Lightning (My Canine Friend) (7)
Poetry: “Feeling pain, not feeling hurting”, solid lyrics
Challenge: singer has taken Courage Wolf to heart and is urging others to do the same
Music: song is confident, music is energetic
Melody: good melody, a positively delightful guitar riff during the breaks
Progression: nice development overall, the 'heys' and guitar solo during the third verse especially, the second chorus was unnecessary given the additions in the third
Arrangement: some good hard rocking going on here, subtle backing vocals are nice
Production: sounds like you know the business end of a guitar, though I suppose they're both business ends
-excellent, this song was compact but cutting the second chorus would have made it more so

Andy Glover – Hey, Winnebago (6)
X Poetry: lyrics are pretty bland
Challenge: competent if fairly obvious interpretation of the challenge, really just a description
Music: put me in mind of a quiet, small town, outskirts car dealership, good job
Melody: vocal melody line was whistlable, would have liked the piano breaks to deviate a lot more
Progression: builds and dies away nicely, neat length that doesn't outstay its welcome
Arrangement: the backing vocals rather make this song, strip down instrumentation fits the tone
Production: well performed, you've a good set of pipes, its not a problem that the song was very quiet but you might want to try a little compression
-competent but unremarkable, try and be more ambitious to set yourself apart from the crowd

Foobar - Leeroy Jenkins (5)
Poetry: you made me laugh so you get this mark, transition from second verse to chorus doesn't make any sense
Challenge: appeal to not to judge too harsely, reasonably justifying the pulling of aggro
Music: heartfelt ballad fits the song well
Melody: nice enough song
X Progression: solid structure, but repeats the chorus and certain sound bites to the point of boredom
Arrangement: lovely piano playing, touches of guitar compliment it nicely
X Production: I could have ducked you this point for arrangement but I'll do it here instead, the audio clips from the original video are too frequent, too loud and take the listener out the song
-using sound bytes can add flavour to a song but not like this, please colour your choruses

Jailhouse Payback - Gem Sweater Lady (7)
Poetry: decent wordplay going on it here
Challenge: lyrics paint an interesting portrait of Leslie Hall
Music: evokes the vaguely grotesque nature of the lyrics well
Melody: good movement in the melody, very much enjoyed the guitar solo
Progression: great to hear the break go in unusual directions, nicely compact
Arrangement: guitar fills are excellent, two main guitars play off each other well
Production: sounds fantastic, piano is gorgeous
-very good work overall, don't feel bad I didn't write very much its just hard to criticise without complaint

Ross Durand – First World Problems (7)
Poetry: the progression of the day ties the song togeather well, the Mom line is an excellent addition
Challenge: superfluous, easy to empathise, bang on
Music: blues fits meme perfectly
Melody: solid blues melody and a commendable kazoo solo to boot, oh boy!
Progression: sticking the bridge in the middle works, repeated refrain works well here, succinct
Arrangement: striped back and its all you need, finger picked guitar adds sufficient depth
Production: you play that guitar very well, vocals do a good job of adding flavour to melody

Q - Chuck Norris (5)
X Poetry: lyrics are not funny or impressive enough, relies too heavily on existing puns
Challenge: picking purely musical facts for the verses worked well, would have liked to see you take this meme in another direction
Music: aggressive rock sound matches Chuck Norris' bad assery
Melody: switch between spoken word and singing works, your first line isn't true, I mean none of its true but never mind
X Progression: awkward intro, drum transitions don't into choruses don't work, fading out is almost always an inferior ending to a song, especially if all you are doing is repeating an early chorus
Arrangement: 7/4? good man, rock arrangement works well together
Production: sounds fine, drums sound pretty big, vocals during chorus don't quite work
-try not to lean so heavily on the challenge to write your lyrics, use it as a springboard to something interesting

The Middle Relievers - 2 Eyes 1 Regret (6)
Poetry: yeah, poetry really not the right word, lots of swearing works pretty well here
Challenge: the lyrics are gross...just like the video, well played
Music: switching vocal styles at times for the two viewers works well
Melody: good tune, the solo melody itself is fine
X Progression: song drags, very little development, break adds something but not enough
Arrangement: instruments work well together, backing vocals add a nice touch in fourth section
Production: instruments sound good, you're a decent singer, that's a suspect orchestral font
-props for taking on 2 girls 1 cup, but if you're going to repeat yourself so much you might as well come up with some additional digusting lyrics for a four minute song

Army Defense - Miss Teen USA South Carolina (7)
Poetry: nice heat/beach theme throughout
Challenge: different perspectives adds depth, first person lends sympathy
Music: light, fun nature of music supports the summery lyrics
Melody: there's a lot of great guitar solos going down this round, keep 'em coming!
Progression: good intro, nice mixing up of structure, extended breaks keep it fun
Arrangement: spacious, lots of great phrases coming from a ton of different sources
Production: great full band sound, you did good!
-normally this is where I'd say repeat the lyrics less but I was enjoying the music so much I didn't care

Glen Raphael – Ask A Ninja! (6)
Poetry: fine but forgettable
Challenge: would have liked to have seen you incorporate more giving advise about ninjas rather than just facts about ninjas
Music: light-hearted lyrics match the quick and upbeat music
Melody: fun tune, impeccable use of murder
X Progression: I get that you were playing for time but I'd have cut the penultimate chorus out and died a little slower, the intro was good so why not throw in some more breaks for variety?
Arrangement: vocals and guitar work well together, never feel thin
Production: your good Samaritan deserves more credit
-song needed a little more depth and development for my tastes, its still fun though

Dr. Lindyke - Famous Last Words (7)
Poetry: “That we want...you want it? connection/appeal to the listener works well, thoughtful lyrics
Challenge: an inspirational song for a inspirational speech, works for me
Music: the ballad approach and the nods to the 'A Whole New World' match the tone of the song without feeling over the top
Melody: soaring
Progression: drums kick in for movement, orchestra adds interest, breaking it down to just piano keeps it interesting, fading out is rarely the correct choice
Arrangement: piano and drums are cohesive, orchestra fills out grand nature
Production: vocals are little quiet during the verse, overall pretty clear
-a lovely tune, there's nothing wrong with production values guys, keep exploring them

Jenny Katz - Boom Goes The Dynamite (7)
Poetry: I love the details of this sordid affair
Challenge: an inspired response to the challenge
Music: I have mental picture of this shaby hotel room and I feel like I should be smoking
Melody: lovely jazzy vocal line
Progression: standard structure works well, good bridge, piano and keyboard keep it interesting
Arrangement: the steady guitar comping adds an inevitability, the jazzy accompaniment swirls around it divinely
Production: great, sounds like I'm in a jazz lounge, gorgeous vocals, Michael adds a lot
-this is brilliant, more of the same please!

Edric Haleen – For Zoe
Poetry: profound, touching, the audience almost stealing the memories of this girl is an imposition
Challenge: bold interpretation of the meme, addressing the audience gives a feeling of guilt
Music: tears, actual tears
Melody: still crying
Progression: sprinter intro matches the meme's joke before slowing into the minor discomfit of the song, very yes
Arrangement: stark arrangement perfectly
Production: very pleased to see Zoe Gray returning, haunting vocals match a reflective piano
-you've pulled something tragic out of a joke, that's a powerful accomplishment (continues sobbing)

Brian Gray - Descartes And I (7)
Poetry: reflective, seems a little unfocused and confused, did you actually clone yourself? ARE YOU A DINOSUAR, SIR!
Challenge: I counted three memes, I imagine this is what hanging out with Philosraptor would be like
Music: mellow accompaniment fits the tone of the lyrics well
Melody: sweet vocal line, decent guitar breaks
Progression: breaking down the bridge and developing the drums adds interest, dropping the penultimate chorus and rocking out on the drums sooner would have kept it more succinct and had it be the better for it
Arrangement: gently percussion and finger picked guitar gives a laid back feel, nice backing vocals
Production: well performed, well mixed
-you have all the right ideas and skill, tighten the whole thing up to stand out from the crowd

Godz Poodlz – Miss Carolina
Poetry: “Miss Carolina, you're Miss Information to me” is just right
Challenge: a fun take on the meme, good work incorperating parts of the original reply into the lyrics
Music: Hawaiian serenade works perfectly
Melody: lovely, just lovely, solo timbre doesn't work but the melody itself is fine
X Progression: solo comes to soon, transitions from verse to chorus a little awkward, song drags, that's a long chorus to repeat three times
Arrangement: guitar and ukulele keeps things sweet and simple, your synth solo doesn't really work
Production: balance was fine, each individual instrument was good, nailed the vocal style, your snare was muddying up the beat
-cut the second verse and chorus, pick a different synth and this is a great song

Blimp Exhaust - S.A.P. (Socially Awkward Penguin) (7)
great riff, killer guitar break, effective use of chorus colouring, could do with more musical development, claps in outro
Poetry: simplistic lyrics for simple theme, tells a story, good stuff
Challenge: solid take on the challenge, finds the theme of the meme without trying to force in a penguin (awkwardly)
Music: low fi rock song matches the everyday tone of the lyrics well
Melody: its a good tune, its a great riff and its a killer solo
Progression: an effective use of chorus colouring that demonstrates how it should be done, claps a nice touch at the end, guitar break is good, could have used backing vocals or some guitar fills to complete it for me
Arrangement: simplistic mix of guitars and drums works well, wouldn't have suffered for an addition
Production: well performed, well mixed, sounds great
-great jorb! Add in some additional accompaniment for flair and I will be content

Steve Durand - One Red Paperclip (7)
Poetry: workmanlike, the story progression works, the bridge is the only standout
Challenge: tells the tale pretty well, would have liked something more ambitious
Music: the gradually building song works well with the mem
Melody: melody is a little plodding, wind saves the day
Progression: the drums kicking in after the intro works well, the wind section compliments the rest of the song
Arrangement: a clarinet and a ukulele, you spoil me! Rhythm section puts in good work too
Production: well balanced, the brass sounds exuberant
-musically this was lovely, unfortunately it was let down by some pedestrian lyrics

'Buckethat' Bobby Matheson (7)
Poetry: song sets up a punch in third verse, simple but effective
Challenge: “first world problems are problems, too”, taking a joke meme and making it in earnest serves you well
Music: gentle accompaniment for a mellow song
Melody: good melody, accordion build into a solo is excellent
Progression: accordion adds the necessary interest, doesn't outstay its welcome
Arrangement: sweet, sweet accordion...its been too long, striped back rhythm section is appropriate
Production: competently performed, accordion a little loud
-this is a good song without real fault, lacks a little dynamism needed for a great song

Atom & E.V. - Welcome Wagon (6)
Poetry: if you try to write a funny song and I laugh you get a point, lol
Challenge: interpreting the meme as a country song fits it perfectly
Music: country style music sells the joke
Melody: good tune
X Progression: you were playing for time at the end, key change wasn't enough to keep it interesting, throw in a solo or a bridge, something
Arrangement: simplistic country band works for this song
Production: well balanced and the instruments sound fine, your vocals seem to be struggling to keep up with the song
-solid plan, if you'd mixed up the structure a little, repeated the Winnebago line less and sworn more you would have nailed this
The Orion Sound - Hashtag (Damien's Story) (7)
Poetry: second verse felt out of place at times, pretty good otherwise, please colour your choruses
Challenge: kinda snarky tone fits the insignificant tone of meme well, AIDs isn't a 'first world problem'
Music: cohesive
Melody: catchy melody
Progression: lovely intro, good breakdown, exciting outro, never drags
Arrangement: piano had some good movement, percussion filled out the sound
Production: piano well played, great vocal performance too, balance was okay, recording quality had problems, good equipment is expensive I know, struggled to hear the backing vocal responses
-good work, focus your lyrics on the message you're trying to convey and repeat your choruses a bit less

T.C. Elliot - One Red Paperclip (7)
Poetry: “Trading up for happiness”, singer feeling elevated, lyrics about “destiny” and “feeling brand new” feel cliché and out of place
Challenge: good job of getting some heart out of the meme
Music: song carries a momentum that fits the lyrics' journey
Melody: enjoyable melody, solid guitar solo
Progression: song is energetic and compact, sections follow each other very naturally
Arrangement: bass and guitar riffs compliment each other, off beat rhythm guitar complete the succulent groove
Production: sounds great, well performed, bass guitar in particular
-this is an accomplished song on the whole, just tighten up your lyrics a bit

MC Ohm-I - Down In Plankistan (7)
Poetry: its a fun story that flows naturally and clearly
Challenge: you've spun this incredible tale out of a meme that doesn't lead it to such, good job
Music: Arabian influenced music works perfectly, of course
Melody: good rapping
Progression: nice intro, break down adds some nice variety, third chorus and beyond is totally unnecessary, if you want to get the highest possible ranking from me don't fade out, the end is just as important as the start
Arrangement: interesting mix of instruments, percussion beat sound especially good
Production: sounds great, very good vocal performance
-loved it until the end, you really could have cut the last minute off

Brandon Lorrekovich - Hankey Plankey (7)
Poetry: this is very funny whilst still reading very naturally
Challenge: using the meme in place of something sexual is a great concept
Music: bringing the funk completely sells your lyrics
Melody: great melody, instruments easily carry the song during the breaks
Progression: solid structure, excellent break down, last two minutes of the song are pure indulgence
Arrangement: good stuff, I could listen to that bass guitar all day, subtle elements like the record scratches I think (?) are a nice touch
Production: great recordings, vocals get a little lost in the mix, perhaps try parallel compression, percussion so heavily on the left sounds a little weird
-fantastic song and the best title of the round, entering a six minute song in the same round as potentially forty others is dangerous, reel it in a little

Vincent Black Shadow - Baby Panda Sneeze (6)
Poetry: dreamy lyrics are strangely compelling
Challenge: this was an ambitious take on a difficult meme to make musical and you pulled it off
Music: the accompaniment creates a really interesting mood
Melody: lovely melody, nice synthetic flute motif
Progression: intriguing structure, switching vocals works well, outro went off the rails for no benefit
X Arrangement: simple accompaniment works well until end, if your random animal noises and effects were supposed to be a sneeze they failed
Production: fascinating sonic landscape, sounds fine, good vocal performances
-I enjoyed this gem of song for the first two minutes, then the outro ruined the mood for me, you didn't even need to play for time at that point

The Chocolate Chips - Forever Alone (7)
Poetry: great lyrics, the second verse is fantastic
Challenge: hit the triviality of the general meme's usage in the first verse, then you expanded it into some sincere and melancholic
Music: moody music for angst ridden lyrics
Melody: the vocal line at the heart of this song propels it all the way
Progression: slow build for a bittersweet climax
Arrangement: slow bass line and gentle percussion underneath pizzicato strings, lovely
Production: electronic sources mesh wonderfully, vocal effects don't sound quite right in first verse, sound good for the rest
-this is wonderful, keep it up!

Wait What (The Band) - We R Not Gay (5)
Poetry: I laughed, point
X Challenge: I feel bad because you were reacting to criticism, but nothing about this song says rage guy
Music: dance backing matches lyrics just fine
Melody: solid melody, good refrain
X Progression: a lot of repetition, needed more development
Arrangement: sparse backing works, xylophone nice addition
Production: sounds good, brief guitar sounded great
-this is funny song with a decent beat lacking in musical development, still a lot of fun though

Kevin Savino-Riker - The Ballad Of Andrew Meyer (6)
Poetry: the way the singer changes the direction of his appeal from Kerry to the audience adds sympathy
Challenge: clever rhyming builds up to the meme, good dramatisation that retains Meyer's original political intent instead of just relying on the catchphrase
X Music: ballad works alright for political bit, but as the lyrics get more aggressive the music doesn't seem to match it very well
Melody: good melody
Progression: small additions like the bass guitar and backing vocals keep a short song interesting, would have liked to have heard something more interesting once he get tased
Arrangement: slick inclusion of percussive elements, subtle bass guitar is subtle
Production: beautifully performed guitar, good vocals too
-nicely done, really wished the end of the song went somewhere very different

Josh Holober-Ward (6)
Poetry: the frustrations of being an Internet cat, cute, some good one liners too
Challenge: I think you hit every cat meme here, excellent
Music: the music and lyrics fit like a glove
Melody: enjoyable melody
X Progression: at four minutes the tune and simple accompaniment dragged, percussion eliviated this somewhat but not enough
Arrangement: lovely piano playing, good fills, vocals were nice too
Production: sounds good, piano especially
-this is a solid tune with fun lyrics, music just wasn't enough to sustain my interest

SHADOW:

Dex01 - I Hate A Meme
Poetry: "his cookie cutter, stupid bullshit really is a bore" is the absolute correct line for this song
Challenge: referencing other memes adds some self-awareness for the character, lyrics come across as more frustrated than angry, still seems to work
Music: aggressive post-punk (is that what its called?) sound well suits the meme
Melody: good melody
Progression: intro rolled out nicely, good structure, outro felt out of place and unnecessary, the shorter the better for this sort of song
Arrangement: backing vocals add good flavour, good rhyhtm section easily carries the song
Production: great crunchy guitar, solid drums, struggling to make out the vocals at times, parallel compress perhaps, slight timing issues with the guitar in the verses
-enjoyed this, needs a little polish but its most the way to a rocking good time

SpinTunes #6: Round 2 Challenge

Song Fight - Write a fight song for your favorite sports TEAM.  It doesn't have to be a professional team.  This should be about the team, not 1 or 2 athletes working together. (1 minute minimum) (your submission is due February 10th 11:59PM)

Submitting Entries:- Entries must be received by the given deadline. Otherwise it'll be posted as a shadow. Received means that it has to appear in my e-mail inbox by the given deadline. If there is a blackout in your area, your computer crashes, or your dog actually eats your thumb drive...I will not care. You are allowed to send in a draft of your song early just in case something horrible happens & you miss the deadline. Then you can add polish to your song & send in a better version closer to the deadline. 1 minute late is still late people.

- Name your file the song's title, but without spaces & punctuation.

- Title of the e-mail should be the title of the Challenge & your band's name.

- Other file sharing options if you need them: YouSendIt, Sound Cloud & Drop Box. Please send an e-mail as I already stated, but with the download link if you need one of these services. Please follow directions so your file doesn't wind up in my spam or trash folder accidentally.

Side Notes:
- Good luck everyone. I don't care who wins, but I hope you all have fun & maybe even learn a little something along the way.

- Remember that you are allowed to send in a little background about your song. Some people don't like to do that, and you don't have to, but if you want to write a couple sentences about your song I'll post it on the BandCamp page for people to see. Some judges will look at the lyrics & this extra info, but they aren't required to.

- If you didn't sign-up in time to compete in SpinTunes #6, you can still complete the challenge & send in a song. It'll be uploaded with the other entries as a "Shadow Song". Check the FAQ if you don't know what that means. You can even complete past challenges from previous contests.

- If you didn't sign-up you can also do a song for "Single Rainbow Across The Internet". You're song would be played during the LP as well.

- The only other way to get your music played at the LP is to cover "Today's The Day" by Inverse T. Clown.

- Feel free to leave any questions in the comments.

SpinTunes #6 Round 1 Totals

Here are the links to your reviews:

Official Judges:

Guest Judges: Joe Lamb
Alternate Judge's Review: Coming soon
NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT: Sammy Kablam

You can listen to all the wonderful songs from this round by checking out the free album HERE.

There was a mistake in the original calculations I posted & the totals & rankings have been adjusted.  The new totals DID change the outcome of the round.  Originally Godz Poodlz were shown as being 'safe' & The Middle Relievers were eliminated.  With the new totals those 2 groups switched places.  To be as fair as possible in this unfortunate circumstance, both Godz Poodlz & The Middle Relievers will be moving on to the next round.  The number of eliminations for round 2 will stay as planned, but we'll add 1 more elimination in round 3 to get us back on track to having 4 finalist.

I'm very sorry for this mistake, and I'd be even sorrier if Heather wasn't around to blame.

Feel free to check for mistakes in my math...again.

Spintunes #6 Round 1 Review: Paul Potts

This is my first time judging SpinTunes. After participating in a couple of contests, right now I find myself without adequate time to write new songs. I am grateful to Travis for offering me the chance to serve as judge. I have wondered for some time what it would be like to be on the other side of one of these contest. I have yet to win one, but at least no one can say I have no idea what it's like to participate.

Despite some unfortunate deadline eliminations, there were a lot of songs this round. I tried to listen to them all several times, over a period of days, and make initial notes on a personal Wiki, and then come back to the notes and update them. Because of the sheer number, I'm doing my best _not_ to write a long, detailed reviews.

There were 30 songs to judge -- the second mix of Baby Panda Sneeze isn't under consideration, and there was one shadow. It's frustrating trying to rank _all_ of them. Oh, it's actually easy to list my absolute favorites, the ones I am craving to hear again, and also the ones I least want to hear again, but it's the "mid-pack" that is frustrating. Let's get on with it...

1. Jenny Katz - Boom Goes The Dynamite: This is such a VERY different take on this meme than Steven's version! It's just gorgeous. Oblique and original lyrics. The sultry chanteuse thing with the minimal drum kit and brushes really tickles my ears, especially the way the guitar is the rhythm section instead of the drums. It has this little bit of darkness to it, like Portishead -- I would almost expect the nightclub band in a David Lynch film to be playing this in the background. Also, it's quite nicely recorded -- well-done technically as well as performance-wise. Some great little touches like the subtle use of the kick drum on- and off-beats.

2. MC-Ohm-I - Down In Plankistan: Very funny and engaging arrangement, and imaginative use of the meme -- it makes up a whole short story about the meme. Well-performed vocals. One of the best songs of this round. I'm guessing the music was mostly assembled out of a sample library but that doesn't matter, the sounds were well-chosen, well-put-together, and it works well.

3. RC - The Philosoraptor: Really fun song. Nice, funky bass line, very cool guitar work, creative percussion, nice scratching. Clever lyrics with the dinosaurs warning modern life forms ("for all your advances -- I don't like your chances" is a great line). A very likeable song. On the downside, maybe just a little too cool emotionally for the subject matter (compare to The Police, "Walkin' in Your Foosteps"). At 3:36, feels just about the right speed and length.

4. Steven Wesley Guiles - Boom Goes The Dynamite: I think this song is in the style of Big Audio Dynamite, channeling Joe Strummer's vocal style and telecaster tone - how very appropriate. Anyway it's very enjoyable, nice hook and nice synths and kick drum and even a fun bridge. Ends perfectly without dragging out too long (which is pretty important when a song's lyrics have only a very few things to say). The transition into the bridge feels somehow too abrupt.

5. Josh Holober-Ward - Internet Cats: A clever take on a bunch of cat memes in which the cats defend themselves against the stupid ideas they've been tagged with. I like the way it mixes up several different dumb cat memes and very clearly indicates which one is which without repeating their names. Quite funny, and a lot of fun with the little vocal bits. Josh, you can haz kudos.

6. Ross Durand - First World Blues: Nice guitar work. Recording seems just a little fuzzy. I always tend to enjoy Ross's lyrics. Singing's fun but not great. People who have heard my song "Leaving Ann Arbor" know I'm a fan of kazoo in pop songs and so I smile when we hit the kazoo break. Lyrics aren't stellar but fit decently into the traditional country-blue structure. Nice integration between accompaniment and vocals. Short and sweet.

7. Jerry Skids - Not A Good Guy: Jerry's take on the "evil Bert" throughout history is funny. Minimalist instrumental arrangement, but it works fine. I like the layered vocals, even if they are a little sloppy and the recording quality is not great. I like how it builds up to the impassioned choruses and then a final sad coda -- some real musical insight went into building an emotional arc here. The only instrumentation is the guitar, but it's played so passionately it doesn't really need more. My only real criticism is that the verses could use tightening. It would be better to keep just the best gags and keep the track around the 4 minute mark.

8. Glen Raphael - Ask A Ninja: Simple live-sounding recording is a brave choice especially since the recording is not stellar, but it's good enough to get the idea and the lyrics work really well. Glen really showcases his playing and singing. The lyrics are funny. It sounds like I'm hearing this song in a cafe. I can't help but LOL at the ending.

9. Edric Haleen - For Zoe: Edric's style of impassioned musical theater, sung by someone else; the trials of actually being the person behind a meme. Clever goes almost without saying when talking about an Edric Haleen song: "you post them on the Internet for everyone to see. The sentiments are yours, but you attribute them to me" -- what a perfect line! The song is pretty, there's an arc to the lyrics... but with the length, it keeps pulling too far into seriousness for too long and then has to get dragged back periodically to the meme concept. I like the way this works but the verses need to be much shorter, and even at almost 5 minutes the song lacks a really effective ending.

10. TurboShandy - Piss Lighting (My Canine Friend): Looks like the meme here is "Courage Wolf" which I have to admit I did not get at first. Great heavy guitar work, although after that guitar intro I was expecting more of a death-metal vocal than what I heard. It feels like the vocal style doesn't quite match the guitar style. I like the use of canine sound effects in the little breaks. Decently done but just doesn't really grab me. The lyrics don't feel like they really tell enough of a story.

11. Kevin Savino-Riker - The Ballad of Andrew Meyer: Kevin wisely tells a story about the meme and just references it once, like some of the better entries this round, rather than hammering on it. Nicely done. Maybe just a touch too much reverb on the vocals in the first part.

12. Army Defense - Miss Teen South Carolina: Very nice instrumental work in this track. I like the way they are constantly changing it the instrumentation, adding a percussion bit here, changing up this and that. But I think some of this is kind of to cover up the fact that the lyrics are a little sparse. Still, fun and gets the point across without going too long.

13. Brian Gray - Descartes And I: Brian mentioned finger-picking in the chat, but I'm not quite sure what is going on with the instrumentation -- is that a guitar synth, or some kind of MIDI guitar like one of those Casio things from the '80s? Or a MIDI track? Anyway, it's pretty cool, although it kind of falls into the "uncanny valley" between real and fake. As usual I like Brian's chord choices. His lyrics are clever and reference some other memes, but it feels kind of fragmented. It also goes a little too slow and too long. We're 3:38 into it before we even get some drums in attempt to shift it into higher gear, but at that point it's too late and it's already started to tire.

14. Blimp Exhaust - S. A. P. (Socially Awkward Penguin): A quality performance, mix, and master job with the exception of the drums, that sound very mechanical. Lyrics like "she offered to buy you coffee but you said no thanks, I'm not thirsty" make me smile. Nice guitar work. Chorus lyrics are a little weak. Length is about perfect. Good ending.

15. Dr. Lindyke - Famous Last Words: Lyrics are OK. Feels a little forced-sappy to me and too many cliches ("why not lend a helping hand" is a cliched line), but there are some better lines. The vocal performance seems just slightly off, and the recording seems fuzzy and muffled. Still, it has a bit of an arc and some emotion in the performance.

16. Godz Poodlz - Miss Carolina: Godz, I've missed the Poodlz! There really is no substitute. Funny lyrics, but too many repeats of snarky but not-all-that-funny lines like "you're Miss Information to me." Performances are a little weak -- even ukulele parts -- so it feels one-take-and-we're done. Chorus is a little too long, maybe, so at the end of 3 repeats it's dragging.

17. The Chocolate Chips - Forever Alone: The production is quirky and it's not a great mix, and yet, I find myself liking the mournful sound here and the odd instrumentation, the accidentals in the melody, and the fat bass synth sound, with the guitar part flying in. More like a sketch than a painting, but promising, and I am hoping to hear more from this artist.

18. Ross Durand - One Red Paperclip: The whiny/silly voice thing feels a little weak in this track, although the lyrics are decent. Backing horns are a nice touch. It feels like Ross is saving his energy for the more competitive rounds. Is that a parakeet in the background?

19. "BucketHat" Bobby - Problems: A Dylan pastiche with a heavily reverbed vocals and instrumentation that might come out of Highway 61 Revisited. I know Dylan is like unto a God for a lot of musicians, but I've never been able to enjoy that album all that much, and I've tried many times. Anwyay. There's an interesting idea here -- Bobby goes through the first two verses agreeing with the original meme, but then the lyrics take a turn to reveal that even in the first world people are _actually_ falling into poverty. This basically contradicts the sarcastic idea of the meme and its idea that first-world problems _aren't_ real problems. So the same chorus words are saracastic in the first chorus, but serious by the third? I was interested how Bobby was going to really cement that idea, but the song doesn't quite seem to do it.

20. T.C. Elliott - One Red Paperclip: Reasonably catchy and creative music and lyrics, competently done, but the song really doesn't stand out that strongly for me.

21. The Orion Sound - Hashtag (Damien's Story): Better than some previous work I've heard from The Orion Sound. There's some cleverness here in the lyrics, especially the way they tell a story to illustrate the meme. The chorus lyrics aren't very memorable, though.

22. Brandon Lorrekovich - Hankey Plankey: I love wah-wah guitar. "You're plankin' between my heart and my soul" was funny but, honestly, is kind of a vague filler line that doesn't give much of an image to work with, especially for having such a prominent place in the song. Good vocal performance but the music gets a little repetitive and the song itself runs a little long. OK, a lot long. It feels to me like the song tries to make up in musical style what it lacks in lyrical substance.

23. The Middle Relievers - 2 Eyes 1 Regret: Instrumentation is pretty. This one at least made me smile with the variety of vocal techniques in use, especially the falsetto in the chorus. To be fair, chosing to write about _this_ meme sets a very high degree of difficulty, because even the _toned-down song referencing the original_ is pretty much guaranteed to be not just tasteless, but Divine-eating-dog-poop-off-the-sidewalk-in-a-John-Waters-movie tasteless. I have studiously avoided looking at the infamous video for all these years and it's probably still best if I only imagine it. The humor in the lyrics makes me almost want to finally watch it. Almost.

24. Vincent Black Shadow - Baby Panda Sneeze (Judge's Mix): I'd like to encourage the artist here because the musical arrangement here is _extremely_ creative and I really like that. From what I can hear, the vocal performance is good and the lyrics are pretty funny, telling an actual story about an awfully lightweight viral video, even if it's a pretty weak foundation to build a song on. But it is marred by a very strangely EQ'ed recording. I'm not sure what went wrong here. I hope the artist will survive to the next round and figure out a better way to record because I'd like to hear more.

25. Andy Glover - Hey Winnebago Man: Lyrics are OK -- not inspiring, but adequate. Vocal performance is a little weak, especially backing vocals. The song would probably have been better without them. The tambourine hits wander off the beat so the song probably would have been better without them, too. However, the song gets credit in my book for its short and funny lyrics that address the cursing Winnebago man directly and tell him he's got a potty mouth.

26. Q - Chuck Norris: Chorus singing is a little weak. The spoken parts did not make me LOL although the artist tried. There is no real arc to the lyrics. They do get some credit for trying the unconventional arrangement and phone-filtered vocals and the result is not that bad, but just not that much fun. Please don't send Chuck Norris to beat me up.

27. Jailhouse Payback - Gem Sweater Lady: Nice arrangement, although the recording sounds muffled. Competent performances all around, but the song has really vague lyrics that don't rhyme well and aren't memorable. "The gifts of the modern age are sometimes hard to understand, but you can understand" is one example. So the music goes along but the whole song doesn't really get off the ground.

28. Wait What (The Band) - We R Not Gay: I don't know what exactly is going on here but it's not much fun to listen to. The performance is not bad, but the lyrics are tedious. Stereotyped homophobic gags just aren't funny. Also, I'm not clear on what meme they are trying to reference here.

29. Atom & EV - Welcome Wagon: I know the songwriters here are trying to do their best with a pretty dumb meme, but the net result is just not that fun to listen to. The bleeped vocal thing is getting old, the singing is unimpressive, and the instrumentation is bland.

30. Foobar - Leeroy Jenkins: the piano is OK, and the singing is adequate for the job, but the mixed-in voices and especially their uneven volume levels makes it painful to listen to. I understand that the song is using clips from game audio, but they would need to be better compressed and EQ'ed to smoothly fit into the mix. There are far too many of these clips and the constant repeats of the same clips get on my nerves.

SHADOWS

Dex01 - I Hate a Meme (Shadow): This shadow doesn't get a number ranking, but if I did give it a rating, it would rank somewhere in the middle of the pack. The instrumental tracks don't really come together that well. I can appreciate the sentiment, though, and I'm sure a lot of the contributors agree with the lyrics. So, it's a great song to end the album!

Spintunes #6 Round 1 Review: Niveous Devilchild

Hey Spintunes. It’s your old pal, Niveous. I’m glad to be back. Last time I was here, it was fun. It also got a bit insane. By the end of it, there were folks with pitchforks and torches at my door. This time around, I’m sure it’ll be different.

Who am I kidding?

Shields up. Set Phasers on Kill. It’s time for another set of Spintunes reviews.

This time around, I tried out a new method for my listening. I gave a first general listen and then I ranked everyone. Then I gave a second listen focusing on lyrics and how well the bands met the challenge, then I ranked everyone again. Then I gave a third listen focusing on music and performance. Ranked everyone again. Then I gave a final listen which was more general but I could get a better sense of how songs grew on me or got on my nerves as the week progressed. Most importantly in that final rank, I figured out which songs that I would keep in my music collection and which ones would eventually find their way to the recycle bin. Then I made a final rank and here we are. What did I learn? There was a definite higher echelon of songs. A third of the songs were top notch and keepers. Here are the songs from worst to first. But before we jump in, a mention of this round’s shadow (which I didn’t given such a rigorous set of listens to because I had 30 other official tracks to listen to).

Dex01’s “I Hate A Meme”
It’s a pretty painless bit of pop-punk. It decides to take aim at meme culture. It doesn’t exactly lash out with any real venom in the lyrics. Saying that keyboard cat is old and that Tron Guy wasn’t that great isn’t exactly scathing. So, this song was mostly harmless. Musically, it was decent. It may have lacked a little something in the vocals. All and all, it was just okay. Doesn’t set the world on fire. Doesn’t make me wanna set it on fire.
Onto the top 30.

#30. Atom & E.V., “Welcome Wagon”
There’s a little charm to the way this song sounds. It comes off like an odd fashioned ditty that your classmates would sing on the bus on their way to the field trip to the aquarium. But that also makes it grating to listen to over and over again. Then there’s the issue of the censoring. This song is based on the meme Winnebago Man. Winnebago Man is only a meme because of his filthy language. Take out the filthy language by censoring and you’ve got nothing. So, why censor the song? It doesn’t make a true representation of a meme it’s about. This song failed on quite a few levels, so that’s why it’s an the bottom of the list.

#29 Q, “Chuck Norris”
Did Q actually write these lyrics or did he just pilfer the Chuck Norris facts website? Either which of way, a song like that already exists (See: ERB- Norris v. Lincoln). But I’m not going to fault him for that. I’m going for fault him for not being funny with the Chuck Norris facts. I’ll admit that I liked the Cee-Lo one and the Aerosmith one elicited a chuckle the first time but most of them flopped, like the Jimi Hendrix one. And the Chuck Norris can chorus was really weak. This song just didn’t come together as planned. BTW, Chuck Norris did not make George Harrison’s guitar weep. His guitar gently weeps and there’s nothing gentle about Chuck.

#28 Andy Glover, “Hey Winnebago Man”
I like Andy Glover’s voice but this song is just so sleepy. I know part of it is the mix and I hate to fault anyone for that but the vocals and guitar feel like they were recorded in a pillow while the tambourine is much further forward in the mix. Beyond that, the lyrics do nothing for me. There isn’t really much creatively in them.

#27 Foobar, “Leeroy Jenkins”
It’s a gimmick that missed the mark. Including audio from the meme was an interesting idea but not every experiment hits the mark. This one missed by a mile because it was just way too distracting. Couple it with some weak vocal performances and lyrics that compare Leeroy Jenkins to premature ejaculation and what you have is a recipe for disaster. This is the song that probably dropped the most for me from first listen to last.

#26 Vincent Black Shadow, “Baby Panda Sneeze”
First things first. There’s already a band called the Vincent Black Shadow.

Now that that is out of the way, let’s talk panda song. I like the musical choices but not the execution. There’s no feeling in the vocals. The keys have a great sound but the melody isn’t interesting. The only part that was interesting to me was the last verse and the crazy extro. But even with the last verse, you had odd lyrical choices like “show mercy as you sneeze”. I would like to hear more from this band but just not this song.

#25 Glen Raphael, “Ask A Ninja”
The song is just bare bones g^2 (that’s guy & guitar). As someone who does a lot of that, I can appreciate the sparseness. But when it’s so sparse, suddenly the focus gets sharpened. That may not have been the best thing here. The vocals are only okay and there isn’t much in the way of a performance. He could’ve just talked his way through the song. But the guitars were fine. The lyrics were too cutesy for my taste. Altogether, this song was just kinda plain. It ranked this low just because it didn’t spark enough interest.

#24 Godz Poodlz “Miss Carolina”
Sigh. One of the things about being a judge is that you can’t just get away with saying “I don’t like it”, you have to back it up. Hell, the bands deserve it. So, instead of saying “I don’t like it”, I’m going to say that the lyrics missed the mark with me especially the Miss Information pun on which the chorus is hinged. I didn’t like some of the musical choices (for example 1:06 to 1:21). And the song definitely ran out of steam after 2:30. Now, I can get away with saying that it’s just not my bag.

#23 Buckethat Bobby “Problems”
Little flaws. Just a bunch of little things that grated on me. “Or shaken” for one. Another thing was the accordion solo was just seemed to burrow into the brain while at the same time being uninteresting at the same time (not a good combo). But one thing I did enjoy was that the song did bring everything around to real problems vs. first world problems. I probably would’ve liked the song more if it was all about the contrast (and had a bit less accordion).

#22 Wait What? “We R Not Gay”
So, this song is supposed to be about Rage Guy, right? But, it’s all about denial not rage. There’s no rage here. If “No Homo” was on the list, then Wait What would’ve nailed it. This was a serious miss of the mark. Why is it so high on the list then? Well, it’s still in the lower echelon but it ranks higher because there’s a little charm to the song and I liked the bridge. And “Mens choir sing!” reminds me of Hamlet 2.

#21 Jailhouse Payback “Gem Sweater Lady”
The best of the lower echelon songs. While JP has a good voice and composed a pretty nice tune, it fails to capture the meme. It was a hard one to choose. It’s based around Leslie Hall’s exuberant comedy but it’s packed into a song that basically defined middle of the road for me in this fight. It’s the song that I feel like I’m most likely to forget in a day. Just very bland. But I do appreciate a good guitar solo. If JP survives, he should bring more of those.

#20 T.C. Elliott “One Red Paperclip”
Part of TC Elliott’s low score wasn’t his fault. He just got outshined by Steve Durand. Both songs have very similar lyrics but Steve’ song was just better. So, that diminished Elliott’s tune. But it didn’t help either song that the lyrical content was mostly just a straightforward retelling of the story by listing the traded items. TC tried to get a little more into the motivations behind the story but only scratched the surface. Vocals are kinda talky on the verses and the music isn’t very interesting except for the occasional guitar lick.

#19 Jenny Katz, “Boom Goes The Dynamite”
The vocals are well done with the smoky torch song feel. There’s a very cool instrumentalization going on in the song with the drums accenting the song while the staccato guitar creates a great groove. And the story is sexy and everything is pulled together so well. This song would be in my top echelon if not for the fact that this song has zip, zero, cero to do with the meme Boom Goes the Dynamite other than using the phrase. Total challenge fail. Great song otherwise.

#18 Brian Gray “Descartes & I”
The ballad of Philosoraptor has a nice chorus. It’s not exactly the most catchy chorus but the double tracked vocals are nice. I think that’s a general complaint of the song. I can get into the music and just disregard the lyrics happily. But I did have a lyrically focused listen. The lyrics are very smartly written but is it to the song’s detriment. When you focus on the lyrics, do they take you out of the flow of the song?

#17 Steve Durand “One Red Paperclip”
Did you read #20? If not, go ahead, I’ll wait. Okay, it has a Randy Newman charm to it. The horns are top notch and all in all, the song is fun. It’s nothing spectacular but it’s undeniably delightful.

#16 Kevin Savino-Riker “The Ballad Of Andrew Meyer”
The funny thing about this song is that KSR-1 (I’m still trying to get that nickname over) does a better job with getting his point across than Andrew Meyer did that day. It’s a very good lyrical retelling…maybe the best word is dramatization.. of Andrew Meyer’s rant and zapping. The music is sparse and lacks a certain spark but overall, the song has got potential and is growing on me.
Halfway point. Enjoy a nice cold beverage. Maybe take a bathroom break. Then settle in for the top 15.

#15 The Orion Sound “Hashtag (Damien’s Story)”
Musically, I love this. It’s got a great feel to it. Such a good rhythm (even if they are off time on occasion, it works) to the verse and chorus. But there is one huge blight in my eyes and that’s the lyrics. The stuff about tweeting and instagram just rub me the wrong way. I know this round is all about writing songs that have to do with these crazy little bits of pop culture but I think this sound would shine if the lyrics got a good clean and polish.

#14 Army Defense “Miss Teen South Carolina”
I’m really split about this song. I’m not necessarily the biggest fan of Gulf and Western and this has that Parrothead feel but there so many really good touches in the song. I almost feel like the meme is pulling down a much better song about a wonderful island home. Kudos to Army Defense for some killer guitar work. And that organ at 1:35 is sublime. This song is growing on me but I feel like the verses about the meme are almost throwaway in comparison to the great chorus.

#13 Ross Durand “First World Blues”
This is a case of the lyrics really carrying a song. This song is straight up no frills blues stuff and I can really do without the cheesy kazoo. But the lyrics have such great snark that they express the meme so well. Some people would rank this song higher and y’know what, I wouldn’t question them. It’s a goiod song, I just think there were better songs in the round.

And about here is where we start splittling hairs. It was much easier to cull the wheat from the chaff up to this point…

#12 Brandon Lorrekovich “Hankey Plankey”
I like the funky wah-wah guitars and the planking love story. The chorus is the weakness in the song. The verses are so much stronger. I also question if Brandon has the necessary swagger in his delivery for this song. Despite the weak chorus, the song is a just plain fun listen. Not as well put together as the rest of the top songs, but still satisfying to hear.

#11 The Chocolate Chips “Forever Alone”
What made this song work is the atmosphere created. The Choco-voice may not be for everyone but it is great in a song about the forever alone meme. The song doesn’t overstay its welcome. Sure, the lyrics get a little ridiculous by mentioning Wendy’s food one moment and then the heavens in the next, but there is such a great mood to the song created by the keys and the delivery that you can get passed that faux-pas.

And now the top 10.

#10 The Middle Relievers “2 Eyes, 1 Regret”
The song that grew on me the most over the past week is this one. It’s a joke that works and makes me chuckle consistently. I greatly enjoy the falsetto voice of the friend. The song is such a great portrayal of the meme. The viewer’s parts seem so harried because of the falsetto, the language choices, and the great contrast between the two voices. How knew I would enjoy a song about scat porn so much?

#9 MC Ohm-I “Down in Plankistan”
Remember when I mentioned splitting hairs, here is one example. This song has a great story with a creative interpretation of the meme. The rap is flawless in its performance. The one chink in the armor is the music, more specifically the handclaps which sound like they are clipped and just get annoying after a while. Take out the handclaps and this song would be in my top 3 (maybe even top 2).

#8 Josh Holober-Ward “Internet Cats”
The internet is made of cats, so this song is perfect. Okay, it’s not perfect because it’s got some silly meow-meows and there are just plain better musical compositions in the round but there are some great things in this song like the Longcat line about length and depth. The whole keyboard cat verse is pretty darn good as it deconstructs the meme amazingly. Another great song. Splitting hairs, folks.

#7 Dr. Lindyke “Famous Last Words”
I thought I was going to hate this song, then that big note comes at around 0:44 and the song begins to grow and just becomes a force of nature. The Last Lecture is such an emotional story and the song stays true to it, conveying the emotion through not just the music but the vocal performance using big money notes wisely. I could nitpick that the sparse intro and extro are not as good as the rest of the song and that I’m not a fan of the instrument choices (maybe a little less synthesized) but that would be nitpicking.

#6 RC “The Philosoraptor”
Mixing DJ scratches with some gritty alternative rock a la Fuel makes for a great song. I also love a song with a good guitar solo and this song delivers in spades. I could imagine hearing this song on 90’s episodes of 120 Minutes. That’s a very good thing. This is polished and so very well done. Why did I rank this #6???? Oh, because of the top 5.

#5 Blimp Exhaust “S.A.P.”
So you look at your shoes and walk on… I love that line. This song may be about being socially awkward but the song has swagger. Crunchy rock riffs and a great groove. I rank this song so high because it’s just got great replay value. I haven’t tired of it. When you are listening to the same 30 songs over and over again, it’s so nice to come across one with staying power.

#4 Edric Haleen “For Zoe”
Such a smart take on the challenge. Bringing in the great vocalist was a smart choice (and getting one named Zoe was a stroke of luck/evil genius). The music is so well done. What if Disaster Girl wants to stop being Disaster Girl is such a thought provoking question. In fact, I think that the song should end right there. Everything after 4:10 can go, leaving just the stark coldness and emotion of the question.

#3 TurboShandy “Piss Lightning (My Canine Friend)”
Hard rock and Punk is a perfect complement to Courage Wolf. I like the Helmet-like thump of the intro. Then the punk section comes and it’s ridiculously catchy. So catchy. The drums are very well done. Then add in the cheers which are always a great addition (I’m a big AFI fan so its ingrained in me). Sure, it sounds weird when I walk around singing about taking life “by the balls” but the song is so damn catchy!

#2 Steven Wesley Guiles “Boom Goes The Dynamite”
Energy and fun. Sure, I am a little unsure about the “whole dreams will let you down” bit but the song is catchy, well played and should be included behind a supercut of NBA dunks. This song will fit in nicely on my jukebox and that’s what I hope for at the end of the day. I don’t just do these contests because I like writing reviews. It’s all about searching for great new music and this song is a great fun pop-rock song…

…but there’s one better.

#1 Jerry Skids “Not A Good Guy”
The choice of multitracking the voices is what putting this on top. It’s the cherry on the top of a very well written song. The Bert is Evil references are on-point but it’s not just a list, it’s an unraveling story told from Ernie’s point of view. The multitracking turns the song into a rollicking sing along. It makes you wanna get out some guitars, sit around with some friends and just jam out. Great song, Jerry Skids.

Good round. Keep it up.
