ST22 Round 1 Results

The votes are in! He's won at least one round in every tournament since SpinTunes 17, and SpinTunes 22 is no exception: congratulations to Sober for taking the top spot in the Round 1 rankings. He is followed by The Alleviators in second place;  The Pannacotta Army and Temnere tie for third and will have to saw the bronze trophy in half.

ST22.1 Reviews - Micah Sommersmith

Congratulations to our Round 1 contestants; no matter where you ended up in the rankings, writing and recording a song in nine days is no small feat, and I hope that all of you can find something in your songs to be proud of.

I don’t rank the songs, but I do try to review each round. My thoughts on the Round 1 entries are below.

A disclaimer: my general assumption is that any song is fictional or at least fictionalized, and I always want to make a distinction between you - the songwriter who made the musical and lyrical choices in the song - and your narrator - the imaginary character from whose point of view the lyrics are presented. If I make assumptions about your narrator, in no way do they reflect my views on you as a songwriter!

ST22 Round 2 Challenge

The judges have almost finished the arduous task of ranking and reviewing your Round 1 songs. While we wait for their results, you get a head start on the Round 2 challenge. Before I reveal the challenge, let me remind you that contestants eliminated in Round 1 are encouraged to submit shadow entries to Round 2; vacancies are common, and shadows submitted by the deadline are eligible for reinstatement to fill those vacancies, as if they were never eliminated!

This round, we're pivoting from Round 1's lyrical challenge to a musical one. The judges are all very excited about this one, and I echo their enthusiasm. We can't wait to hear your songs and respond to them with our reviews. Read on for your Round 2 challenge:

All-Request Listening Party - tonight at 10 PM EDT

21 SpinTunes tournaments mean a lot of great songs - over 1700 songs, in fact! You may have some favorites throughout the years, and tonight is your chance to hear them again.

What to do while the judges judge?

You worked hard on your Round 1 entry, and now you still have a week to wait for the judges' reviews and rankings. In the meantime, maybe you want to keep up your musical momentum. What to do? I've got two suggestions for you: record a cover for the SpinTunes 22 Bonus Round, and/or submit an entry to the 1000th Song Fight!

ST22.1 Listening Party and Deadline News

The Round 1 deadline has passed and we are snowed in with weather-related songs. Congratulations to the 32 contestants who submitted entries by the deadline!

Running late? Shadow entries have no deadline; submit them when you can and they'll be included on the album and judges will review them as time allows even though they won't be part of the tournament.

After the Listening Party, the judges get to work reviewing and ranking the entries. In Round 1, the judging period is two weeks, with judges' reviews and rankings posted on Sunday, March 24.

Of the 32 competing entries, 22 will move on to Round 2. Here's the full elimination schedule:

• Round 1: 10 of 32 eliminated, 22 move on to Round 2.
• Round 2: 9 of 22 eliminated, 13 move on to Round 3.
• Round 3: 9 of 13 eliminated, 4 move on to the Final Round.
• Final Round: 3 of 4 eliminated, 1 proclaimed SpinTunes 22 Champion.

Here we are, folks, Round 1 of SpinTunes 22 is officially underway. As is tradition, we'll start things off with a wide-open subject matter challenge that's sure to generate a flurry of ideas. Read on for your Round 1 challenge.
